On December 31st, we ended the year with an unforgettable event, Mathematics for Future Leaders: Solving Complex Problems Through Numbers. The day was filled with inspiration, engaging activities, and a strong sense of community. We were thrilled to bring together so many bright and eager minds to explore the power of mathematics and data in solving real-world challenges.
The event featured an insightful talk from our incredible speaker, who guided participants through the importance of mathematics in solving complex problems across various fields. Her discussion not only highlighted the practical applications of math but also encouraged the attendees to think about how they could leverage mathematical principles to drive innovation and tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues. The session sparked a lot of thought and motivated everyone to think about their own futures in STEM.
As is the signature of every WomenforSTEM event, we made sure that the fun was just as important as the learning. One of the highlights of the day was our Drawing Challenge, where each team of four had to draw a picture they were shown, but there was a twist. The person holding the marker was swinging while trying to draw! This added a layer of fun and chaos, but most importantly, it emphasized the importance of teamwork and communication. Each group had to work together, guiding the “swinging” artist to draw the object clearly and creatively. It was a great reminder of how collaboration and cooperation can lead to amazing results, even when things seem out of control.
We also had another exciting game called Number Formation, where groups of 10 participants had to create the numbers shown on the screen. Each member had a letter corresponding to a number from 0 to 9, and they had to work together to form the number as quickly as possible. It was a fun way to encourage teamwork while also testing their ability to work under pressure.
Throughout the event, we also had a networking session that allowed participants to meet new faces and make valuable connections with like-minded individuals. It was a wonderful opportunity for the girls who attended to interact, share their ideas, and build relationships that will support their journeys in STEM.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Somali Mathematical Society for partnering with us to make this event possible. Their support and collaboration helped create an event that was both educational and fun, and we are so grateful for their contribution.
Thank you to all the participants for bringing your enthusiasm and energy to the event. Your passion for STEM is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see the amazing things you’ll accomplish in the future. Together, we are building a stronger, more confident generation of women in STEM!
